White space still works
MH1 Web Design often collaborates on print marketing and Web design
projects with our partner BrochureBuilders.com. Many customers tend to want to overstuff every spare millimeter of space within their brochure design with text or graphics — and this flaw often carries over to their Web site. This is where you have to hire a good designer then trust them to create a functional layout that leaves some space between design features.
Any old newspaper or magazine layout artist will tell you that “White space works.” This means it is crucial to leave some space as a buffer between graphics and text or headlines. Why? Simple. The human eye needs the space to draw attention to key elements that would otherwise be lost in a crammed layout filled with jumbled priorities. White space allows your eyes to focus on what is important in your content and therefore in your marketing message.
A useful design editorial in SmashingMagazine.com describes it: “When everything is stuck together, it becomes more difficult to distinguish between its components and thus more difficult to focus on and thus less scannable.”
Trust your designer and leave that white space alone.
